When working on a layout, it's important to think about focal points and breathing room. Having too many points of interest on a page can feel cluttered and overwhelming!

A few tips to help you with balance between interest and space:
  • Start with a blank page. Add embellishments one at a time. If you're unsure, leave and come back later, to look at your page with a fresh eye.
  • When you come back, think about where your eye is automatically drawn to. If it is more than one or two places, you might have too much going on.
  • Ground your focal point with mats or embellishments that direct attention.
  • Use uneven numbers to create interest - the eye is naturally drawn to odd numbers, looking for the "extra" to complete the pairs.
  • Organize your page into more obvious areas: Focal Point vs. White Space. Remember that dividing unevenly attracts more attention.
